Digital Citizenship (nine elements)



After staying here at this college I came to learn about digital citizenship and it nine elements. I understood that digital citizenship is talking all about individual rights or student right and responsibility toward technology. While using technology we also should have good and positive manner toward it. I also learnt that while using technology there is certain rules and regulation as well as safety and security to be maintained.



Digital Citizenship is a holistic and positive approach to helping children learn how to be safe, secure, as well as smart and effective participants in a digital world. That means helping them understand their rights and responsibilities recognize the benefits and risks, and realize the personal and ethical implications of their actions. Digital citizenship also includes learning about safety concerns like how to protect private information and how to stay safe while communicating onlineIt is all about knowledge and skills to use digital technologies to communicate with others participate in society to create and consume digital content. Digital citizenship is about confident and positive engagement with digital technologies.



The Nine Elements of Digital Citizenship

1. Digital Access
Digital Access is one of the important elements of digital citizenship that should be available to all.  Equal opportunity should be provided to everybody and we should Model proper use of technology to our children. 

2. Digital Commerce
Digital commerce includes buying and selling goods through online. Consumers, including students need to be informed and aware of the risks associated with online purchasing.


3, Digital Communication
Digital communication is another element of Digital Citizenship and it is exchange of information through technology.  Digital communication includes emailing, texting, facebook, wechat, utilizing cell phones, etc. As digital communication continues to grow, it is important that we should not forget how to communicate face to face. 

4, Digital Literacy
Digital Literacy is ability to use digital technology. As digital citizens, it is our responsibility to develop and enhance our technological knowledge. We should support and encourage the acquisition of technological knowledge by other and model the positive use of technology for good causes, personal and professional growth and education.

5, Digital Etiquette
Digital Etiquette means use of internet wisely and Students learn how to be appropriate while online. Students should be taught the importance of being respectful to their online peers and how to conduct themselves responsibly. Educators and parents must be willing to communicate these elements of etiquette to the young technology users in their lives.

 6. Digital Law
As citizens of our country, we are governed by certain laws.  As digital citizens there are also laws that apply to our behavior and interaction. There should be no stealing, no plagiarism, and no abuse of others.  Teachers and students need to be informe  up-to-date about what is legal and acceptable in our environment.

7. Digital Rights and Responsibilities
The citizens of many countries are afforded basic rights. Those who participate in online activity are also given freedoms in their digital environment. Privacy rights and freedom of speech are often discussed and those people who are committed to the concept of Digital Citizenship must take their rights seriously and their responsibilities even more seriously, setting positive examples and helping the integration of technology into new areas.

8.  Digital Health and Wellness
Digital health and wellness mainly talks about issues related to psychology and physical wellness. Physical it refers to eye sight and body posture. If we always focused on the screen, it will affect our eye sight so we have to maintain balance between off screen and on screen. Psychology is all about addiction. So as a teacher we should introduce those issues to the children.

9. Digital Safety and Security
Digital security is another important element of digital citizenship and it is Precaution that all technology users must take to protect our information from being accessed like protecting your identity, your data, your money, etc.
